Ercan Airport got its name from Martyr Major Fehmi Ercan. He was born in 1935 in Balıkesir. 1st of November 1957 he entered the Air War College,  in 30 August 1959 He graduated from military school as a second lieutenant with the regstration number of 1959/56. The pilot, Major Fehmi Ercan, was serving as the commander of the fleet in Diyarbakir 8. Main Jet Base Command At 181. 21 February 1962 after completing his flight training as pilot in command served the Union in various troops.. On February 28, 1960 Lieutenant, first lieutenant on 30 August 1962, 30 August 1967 captain and in 1972  rose to the rank of major. İn 8 August 1973, Major Fehmi Ercan was assigned to the Main Jet Base Training Command in Izmir. İn 20 July 1974 after the rocket attacks from the greeks to the Regimental Headquarters he has been killed along side two soldires and colonel Karaoglanoglu. Martyr Major Fehmi Ercan’s grave is at Kyrenia Karaoğlanolu Cemetery.
